Franz Schubert opens his big Piano Sonata in C Minor with a bang, and it turns out the music’s basically lifted from the opening of Beethoven’s 32 Variations in C Minor. Schubert adds a pedal point to give it more drama, and stretches it out to a fulfilling climax (rather than dashing expectations the way Beethoven does).
