Mechanical longitudinal waves are also called compressional or compression waves, because they produce compression and rarefaction when travelling through a medium, and pressure waves, because they produce increases and decreases in pressure.

Sound is a longitudinal, mechanical wave. Sound can travel through any medium, but it cannot travel through a vacuum. There is no sound in outer space. Sound is a variation in pressure. A region of increased pressure on a sound wave is called a compression (or condensation).

Sound is a wave—a longitudinal wave of pressure that travels through compressible medias (i.e., solid, liquid, gaseous, or made of plasma ). There is no sound in a vacuum; by definition, a vacuum is a space free of any particles or matter.
Sound waves are longitudinal waves of compression and rarefaction in which the air molecules move back and forth parallel to the direction of wave travel centered on an average position, resulting in no net movement of the molecules. When these waves strike another object, they cause that object to vibrate by exerting a force on them.

Particles of the fluid (i.e., air) vibrate back and forth in the direction that the sound wave is moving. This back-and-forth longitudinal motion creates a pattern of compressions (high pressure regions) and rarefactions (low pressure regions).

After many vibrations, a series of compressions and rarefactions moves out from the speaker as a sound wave. The red graph shows the gauge pressure of the air versus the distance from the speaker. Pressures vary only slightly from atmospheric pressure for ordinary sounds.
