Trust me, the iPhone earbud plug won't work in a standard mini outlet. Note that a standard mini male plug has two insulating discs while the iPhone has three - probably for the mic functionality.

Check under accessibility to make sure you don’t have mono audio turned on or sound set to go to one ear.
