What is the difference between male and female connectors? A male connector is commonly referred to as a plug and has a solid pin for a center conductor. A female connector is commonly referred to as a jack and has a center conductor with a hole in it to accept the male pin.

The difference between Male and Female connectors is simple. Just like people the Male has a sticking out “pin” which he plugs into something. The Females on the other hand have a “hole” in which to receive something, usually a “pin”!

Female connectors, like male connectors, may be attached to hardware, wires or cables. This is where the similarity ends. Female connectors have small holes or openings into which a male connector can be inserted. Using the example of the electrical outlet, note the openings in the outlet await insertion of an electrical plug.
