Heads up if you’re travelling in Japan! The Land of the Rising Sun was recently rattled by a pair of powerful earthquakes. On Tuesday night, 26 Nov 2024, a 6.4 magnitude tremor hit the Ishikawa prefecture, followed by a 6.2 magnitude quake near the west coast of Honshu.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Japan's Ishikawa prefecture on Tuesday, the country's meteorological agency reported. The earthquake, which occurred at 1347GMT, had an epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).

Earlier in January, a stronger 7.2 magnitude quake hit the Noto region of Japan. The tremors led to significant damages to roads and infrastructure while 370 people were killed.

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit near Honshu, Japan's west coast, with no tsunami warning or immediate damage reports. The quake occurred at an 8 km depth, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

The quake's epicentre was 10km under sea level, off the northeast Coast of Amami-Oshima Island, the country's meteorological agency said.

Earlier on 1 January 2024, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto region, killing more than 370 people and damaging roads and other infrastructure.
