Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir is expected to resign from his role after 13 years with the university, sources briefed on his plans confirmed Monday. ESPN first reported the news of Muir’s expected resignation.

After nearly 13 years leading one of the most successful intercollegiate athletic departments in the country, Bernard Muir has announced his intention to step down as Director of Stanford Athletics at the end of this academic year.

Muir was named the Cardinal’s athletics director in 2012 and has had the job during a period of intense change in college sports.

Bernard Muir’s time at Stanford is coming to an end. The longtime athletic director is expected to resign from his position in the near future, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. When that move will take place, or who will replace Muir in the meantime, is still unknown.

Bernard Muir led Stanford athletics in the Cardinal’s leap to the Atlantic Coast Conference after the implosion of the Pac-12. A new athletics director will be at the head of the department in Stanford’s second year in the North Carolina-based conference.
