General Motors is set to become the first U.S. automaker with a Formula 1 team when a Cadillac-branded team joins the racing series in 2026, F1 announced Monday, ending a years-long battle between the series and former driver Michael Andretti, who initially proposed a GM expansion.

Formula One announced Monday that “an agreement in principle” has been reached “with General Motors to support bringing GM/Cadillac” to the grid as the sport’s 11th team in 2026.

General Motors is edging toward securing a place on the Formula One grid as early as 2026 when the field could expand to 11 teams.

The Formula 1 grid is set to feature 11 teams for the first time since 2016 after the organisation reached an “agreement in principle” for General Motors to enter when regulations change ahead of the 2026 season.

After a very public failed attempt by Michael Andretti to bring another American team to Formula 1, General Motors has fought through the bureaucracy and politics to join the grid as a works team in 2026. The announcement came this morning after the series just wrapped up the Las Vegas Grand Prix over the weekend.

The difference between now and F1's January rejection of Andretti is that with General Motors, it has exactly what it wanted all along.
