In recent days, Pennsylvania has had two flocks hit by avian influenza, while Ohio has had nine and California has had one.

To increase the number of people who can collect samples for avian influenza testing, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro signed a bill Feb. 6 removing the requirement that certified poultry technicians be U.S. citizens. The techs now need only be legal U.S. residents.

At least one bird from a commercial poultry operation in Lancaster County has tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, according to the state officials.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture on Monday confirmed the first case of avian flu in domestic poultry in 2025. The positive case was found in a chicken flock on a commercial farm in Lehigh County. This is the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in commercial poultry in Pennsylvania since February 2024.
