Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency for the village of Ruidoso, in an area that was scarred by wildfires last year.
Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford advised against tourists visiting the area as the New Mexico mountain town continues to recover from Rio Ruidoso flooding.
Crawford added that a damage assessment will take several days, and windshield surveys along with preliminary reports show 30 to 50-plus homes and businesses have been damaged.
Prior to Tuesday's event, Ruidoso suffered serious flash flooding as recently as June 26. A full damage assessment is underway but will take "several days" to complete, officials said on Wednesday.
