Discount hunters searching for Black Friday deals have officially kicked off the holiday shopping season. Consumers are forecasted to break spending records in 2024, with the average person expected to spend a little over $1,000, up 14% from last year, according to data from RetailMeNot.

Black Friday crowds aren't what they used to be, but shoppers still turned out at brick-and-mortar stores in large numbers this year.

Parking lots were packed this Black Friday at places like Walmart, Target, and the Grand Teton Mall. Studies show Americans plan to spend about $900 on average for presents and seasonal items. That's the most shoppers are expected to spend per-person since 2019.
