Two people detained during a security incident at Gatwick Airport have been allowed to continue their journeys after a suspect package saw a "large part" of the South Terminal evacuated.

Gatwick Airport has evacuated “a large part” of the south terminal following the discovery of a “suspected prohibited item in luggage”, Sussex Police have confirmed. Thousands of passengers are currently gathered in the airport waiting for an update, with flight disruptions expected into the afternoon.

Two people were temporarily detained by police after reports of a suspicious package meant Gatwick Airport's South Terminal was evacuated. The South Terminal, one of two at the airport, was shut at 10:55 GMT on Friday while an explosive ordnance disposal team "made the package safe".
