Thirteen women from the Philippines have been convicted on human trafficking-related charges for acting as surrogates in Cambodia for a ring selling babies to foreigners for cash.

The Philippine government is in talks with the Cambodian government to bring home not just the 13 Filipino women convicted of trafficking, but the babies they are carrying as well, with at least one of the women already having given birth in jail.

Cambodia has convicted 13 women from the Philippines on charges of human trafficking and acting as pregnant surrogates for a ring which targets foreigners for selling babies in exchange for cash.  The Kandal Provincial Court sentenced the 13 women to four years in prison along with two years of suspension.

The Filippino surrogates were convicted on charges relating to selling, buying or exchanging a person for cross-border transfer.
