With Election Day 2024 results in, Republican former President Donald Trump was again elected president. Trump won Alabama’s nine electoral votes over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and then secured the election.
Democrat Shomari Figures won election to a U.S. House seat representing Alabama on Thursday. Republican Rep. Barry Moore, who currently represents the district, is running in the neighboring 1st District after a federal court ordered Alabama to draw a new congressional district that ensured Black residents’ voting power.
Alabama shifted about 3% toward President-Elect Donald Trump in Tuesday’s election. But if unofficial returns are correct, that may have less to do with new Republican votes than a shrinking pool of Democratic ones.
Even more Alabama voters supported Trump compared to the previous two elections. He won by 65%, or 1,454,170 votes, according to unofficial results released by the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office.
With the victory by Shomari Figures, Alabama will most likely have two Black representatives in Congress at the same time for the first time in its history.

Democratic Rep. Terri Sewell won election to a U.S. House seat representing Alabama on Tuesday. Sewell was reelected to Alabama’s 7th Congressional District. She defeated Republican Robin Litaker. Sewell was first elected in 2010.
