PC game platform GOG has launched a new preservation program dedicated to keeping beloved older games playable, “now and in the future.” “If a game is part of the Preservation Program, it means that we commit our own resources to maintaining its compatibility with modern and future systems,” the announcement blog reads.

GOG is launching an effort to help make older video games playable on modern hardware. The GOG Preservation Program will label the classic titles that the platform has taken steps to adapt in order to make them compatible with contemporary computer systems,

The popular digital distribution platform has announced support for an initial list of 100 PC games from the DOS and Windows 95/98 eras and even some newer titles.

The program, announced as GOG.com celebrates its 16th anniversary, is launching for 100 games, including favorites such as System Shock 2, the original Diablo game, and Myst.

In 2008, when GOG.com was launched, it was called Good Old Games. As Steam was on the rise and digital distribution was clearly to become the future of gaming, a Polish company that had just released its first game—a relatively obscure RPG called The Witcher—wanted to get in on the act.
