Overnight, 3-6 inches of snow blanketed southeast Michigan making morning commutes to work Thursday treacherous and closing hundreds of schools and districts, including the Detroit Public Schools, the largest one in the state.

The first major winter storm of the season will bring significant accumulations to Southeast Michigan.Snow will begin Wednesday afternoon and linger into Thursday morning. From 1 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.

The far southeast corner of Michigan will be the only spot with a mixture of various winter weather types. This means we have to look at snow totals and some freezing rain accumulation.

A winter storm brought snow to most of Michigan Wednesday evening into Thursday morning. Snow accumulations between 3-6 inches were expected in some portions of Southeast Michigan. Some areas around and south of I-94 may have seen a wintry mix that includes freezing rain or sleet, which led to a light glaze of ice accumulations.

Southeast Michigan is now predicted to see anywhere between 5-12 inches of snow as a winter storm hits the entire Lower Peninsula.

More than 30 counties in Michigan are under storm watches or advisories as the snow is expected to hit the state beginning 1 p.m. Wednesday.

In southeast Michigan and the Thumb area, the counties under a warning include Huron, Sanilac, St. Clair and Macomb. To the north, the counties under a warning include Alpena, Alcona, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin and Arenac.
