British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper says countries must work more closely to tackle people smuggling. The United Kingdom says it has signed a security pact with Iraq to target people-smuggling gangs and strengthen border cooperation, the latest in its efforts to crack down on irregular migration.

The UK and Iraq have agreed on a "world-first" deal to tackle gangs based in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region that run people-smuggling operations across Europe that result in migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.

As part of the deal, the UK will give Iraqi law enforcement £300,000 for training in border security, focused on organised immigration crime and drug trafficking. On top of this, the authorities in the Kurdistan region of Iraq will get support worth £200,000 to help tighten their border security and tackle irregular migration.
