WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump keeps saying that Republicans’ mega tax and spending cut legislation will eliminate taxes on federal Social Security benefits. It does not. At best, Trump’s “no tax on Social Security” claim exaggerates the benefits to seniors if either the House or Senate-passed proposals is signed into law.

The Senate’s version of the “big, beautiful bill,” passed on Tuesday, includes a $6,000 tax deduction for Americans 65 or older. The provision does not entirely end taxes on Social Security, but it would zero out the Social Security tax burden for 88 percent of seniors,
