The world agreed to a new climate deal in Baku, Azerbaijan Saturday, with wealthy countries pledging to provide $300 billion annually by 2035 to poorer countries to help them cope with the increasingly catastrophic impacts of the climate crisis — a figure many developing countries criticized as vastly insufficient.

The pledged financing from the U.S., EU and other wealthy governments includes hopes for private money — and a Trump-sized asterisk.

The COP29 climate summit ran into overtime on Friday, after a draft deal that proposed developed nations take the lead in providing $250 billion in annual climate finance by 2035 drew criticism from all sides.
