Cyan and white confetti blanketed the center of Weidner Field on Saturday as the Switchbacks punctuated their 10th season by hoisting the club's first-ever USL Championship trophy, following a 3-0 win over Rhode Island FC, which made the league final in its first season.

No matter what happens, on Saturday there will be a team lifting the USL Championship title for the first time as the Colorado Springs Switchbacks host expansion side Rhode Island FC on CBS at noon. Two teams who turned around their form midseason were sides that no one expected to make the final but thanks to their abilities to hang around in matches and score opportunistic goals,

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - UPDATE: At the half the Switchbacks were leading Rhode Island FC 2-0. This Saturday a first-time champion will be crowned. Both the Switchbacks and Rhode Island FC are playing for their first league title at Weidner Field.

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks are playing in the United Soccer League Championship for the first time in the club's 10 year history.

Starting with an uneasy preseason trip when its players didn’t know each other, to a wake-up call in Memphis, to last week's Eastern Conference finals game vs. Charleston Battery, RIFC continued to mature.

The Switchbacks scored twice in the first half and once more in the second to claim the league title in a front of a sold-out Weidner Field.
