The highest peak in the sprawling Great Smoky Mountains National Park is now called by its Cherokee name 'Kuwohi.'

The highest peak at Great Smoky Mountains National Park is officially reverting to its Cherokee name more than 150 years after a surveyor named it for a Confederate general.

The renaming caps an effort begun in 2022 by two enrolled members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Lavita Hill and Mary Crowe. Principal Chief Michell Hicks submitted the formal name-change application last January, including more than 150 pages of background materials and letters of support from local governments and others.

One of the most visited national parks in the country and a major tourist attraction for Middle Tennesseans now has a new name.

The U.S. Board of Geographic Names voted Wednesday to officially change the name of the highest peak in Great Smoky Mountains National Park back to its Cherokee name.

The highest peak of the Great Smoky Mountains, formerly known as Clingmans Dome, has officially returned to its Cherokee name: Kuwohi (pronounced koo-WHOA-hee). The decision comes after the US Board of Geographic Names voted in favor of a request put forward by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

Due to a reporting error, an earlier version of this story misidentified Jared Wheatley as a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Wheatley is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. The highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is no longer named after a Confederate general.
